The Chicago Blackhawks have dug themselves into a 0-2 hole versus the eighth seeded Nashville Predators after being shutout in back-to-back games on home ice. There are a lot of factors to why the Blackhawks are in this dire situation, but one of the biggest ones is that their two top stars have had serious issues with finding the score sheet.
Captain Jonathan Toews had two goals in the Game 7 win over the Anaheim Ducks in 2015, but has just one goal in the 15 games since. He has not lit the lamp in a playoff game since Game 4 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. He does have eight assists during that span.
Since the start of the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, Patrick Kane has score just two goals; the insurance goal in the Cup clinching win over the Tampa Bay Lightning and the overtime goal in Game 5 versus the St. Louis Blues last spring. Kane, like Toews, also has eight assists in those 15 games.
The Blackhawks have $21 million invested in Toews and Kane and need more than just three goals in the past 15 playoff games. The team will not be going for if these two don’t start being the dynamic players we have been used to seeing in past championship runs.
