Last week, Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville informed us that that veteran forward Jordin Tootoo is close to returning from an upper-body injury that has kept him out since the end of training camp.
The Blackhawks placed Tootoo on waivers yesterday and, as expected, he has cleared. The Blackhawks have officially reassigned Tootoo the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League today.
There was no sense to have Tootoo on the in NHL roster as both Lance Bouma and Tommy Wingels have done a good job on the fourth line. Plus, if the Blackhawks aren’t going to risk losing Tanner Kero or Jordan Oesterle to waivers in order to recall Vinnie Hinostroza, they sure aren’t going to do it to keep Tootoo in Chicago.
Tootoo can almost serve as a player/coach when he gets to Rockford. With all of his life experiences both on and off the ice, he can offer a lot advice and leadership to the young players in the Blackhawks organization.
