The Chicago Blackhawks and general manager Stan Bowman are entering free agency with some salary cap space for the first time in years.
While the team is being connected to big names like Joe Pavelski and Anders Lee, Bowman said he's looking for penalty killing forwards on one or two year deals.
Mark Lazerus of The Athletic believes the Hawks' already have their target.
Lazerus reports the Hawks are currently attached to pending free agent Ryan Carpenter of the Vegas Golden Knights.
Carpenter can play on the penalty kill and registered five goals in 68 games and put up nine goals in 36 games the year before.
The 28 year old would definitely come cheap and wouldn't require any term.
While everyone's understandably focused on big names like Joe Pavelski and Anders Lee, I'd expect the Blackhawks to bring in a bottom-six guy or two to create some roster competition. Ryan Carpenter, a defensive-minded center, is one name I keep hearing.
