The Chicago Blackhawks and general manager Stan Bowman surprised the NHL by pulling off a late night trade Sunday night.
The team of course sent forward Nick Schmaltz to Arizona for forward Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini.
There was some chatter that Schmaltz could be traded similar to Ryan Hartman last year, however Schmaltz seemed to have a bigger chance of staying around.
With one year left on his contract, Schmaltz was set to become a restricted free agent in the summer and it seems that's where the problem was.
According to various sources, Schmaltz and the Blackhawks were very far apart in their current negotiations, Jay Zawaski of 670 The Score even reports that Schmaltz wanted over $3million a season.
A steep price for a player who only has two goals this season after putting up 21 last year.
Would you be willing to pay Schmaltz over $3million a season?
I'm told he was asking MUCH more than $3 million. https://t.co/Uh9J9gsINH
